Extremely Rare Early H. P. Hood & Sons Ice Cream Reverse Painted Sign Under Glass
This is an extremely early HP Hood and Sons Ice Cream Sign. It has been framed under glass and I did not open the back for fear of doing any damage to the sign/red paint. Gold lettering appears to be reverse embossed and painted on some form of metal/tin. The framed glass that covers the tin, appears to be reverse painted red with unpainted areas exposing the gold or Cow Logo painted metal behind. You can see the outer edge of the metal under glass where the red paint has chipped off (see photo). Old embossed and painted Hood’s Cow Logo on the bottom left side of the sign. The wood frame appears to have been sanded at one point in time – could be easily re-stained darker if desired. Chipping to the red paint under glass (see photos). Back of frame has some broken paper tape along the bottom edge but upper is still intact – does not appear to have been fully opened. It is possible the the metal was painted red and the glass is not reverse painted as I describe above. Some hazing to the red paint under glass makes this a possibility but my best guess is that the glass was reverse painted red. Outside of the framed sign measures approximately 17.25 inches by 11 3/8 inches. Don’t miss this opportunity to acquire this very rare sign. May be a sole survivor! I will do my best to answer them.
